Why I Fell Head Over Heels (and Sometimes Over My Own Feet) for the Love Netball League
If you’d told me a year ago that I’d be donning a bib marked GS and taking aim at a hoop taller than most of my ambitions, I’d have laughed – probably while cradling my newborn and wondering if I’d ever have the energy to wash my hair again, let alone play sport.
But here I am, a proud member of the Love Netball League, and honestly, it’s been a game-changer. Pun entirely intended.

I hadn’t played netball since school. Even then, ‘playing’ mostly involved hiding behind someone taller and pretending I knew the rules. When I rocked up to my first session, full of nerves, rulebook forgotten and lungs gasping after a quarter, I wasn’t exactly court-ready. At just over 5ft, post-partum and clumsiness in abundance, the odds were not in my favour.
However, with lots of support and patience from my teammates, and advice from the umpires, I found my position – not just on the court, but in the team. I started to improve. Matches became the highlight of my week – like a night out with friends, just with more sweat and fewer cocktails. Although we have had a few nights out too! Our fabulous captain has organised everything from comedy nights to pub quizzes and even bingo (highly competitive, surprisingly intense). These socials have brought us together off the court, forging friendships I genuinely treasure.
It’s not just about getting fit – though chasing rebounds is excellent cardio. It’s about headspace. For one glorious hour a week, I’m not just ‘Mum’. I am me. I think only about the game, not the laundry pile. It has became precious me time – just me, the ball, and usually a much taller defender.

What I love most is how inclusive it is. Women of all backgrounds, ages and abilities are welcomed with open arms (and the occasional friendly elbow). Whether you’re a seasoned player or can’t quite remember what a held ball is, you’re made to feel part of the team.
From matches to tournaments and glittering awards nights, the Love Netball League gives you a sense of achievement and belonging. It’s not just about scoring goals – it’s about finding your tribe. We laugh a lot, both on and off the court, and every session feels like a win, regardless of the scoreboard.
So, if you’re thinking about it – do it. Dust off your trainers, bring a bottle of water and your sense of humour. You might not remember the rules, and your legs will complain, but trust me – your heart will thank you.
