Lucy, Mark and Florence have discovered the perfect UK getaway just a few hours from Derbyshire with plenty to keep the whole family happy.
Before Florence, Mark and I LOVED, travelling abroad. So we never really thought too much about holidaying in the UK and all the fabulous places we were missing out on. Florence is such a busy bee who never wants to sit still for long so, when she came along, we started to opt for holidays in the UK to avoid the waiting around in airports. We especially looked for those that weren’t too long a car journey, as she naps for an hour maximum and gets bored quickly.

Hence, we fell in love with the Lincolnshire coast. You may instantly think of Skegness, which is good fun for kids – I’ll skip to that in a minute – but can we just talk about the beautiful and scenic Sutton-on-Sea and around that area?!
We stayed in Trusthorpe where the beach was absolutely stunning. We walked 15 minutes along the coast to potter around Sutton-on Sea. They are doing a big refurb on a fabulous adventure playground and splash pad, right off the beach with plenty of lovely little shops and a fish and chip shop!
Then we walked 15 minutes towards Mablethorpe and fell upon Queen’s Park where there’s a boating lake with ducks, swans and geese; a cute miniature railway for little ones to ride; another splash pad and paddling pool; and a nice little beach area, sheltered from the wind. There’s also crazy golf, a putting green, a tennis court and flat green bowling! All at just £2 per person. There’s a cafe and toilet and changing facilities there too, plus beach huts to hire and a little adventure playground.
Carry on 10 minutes to Mablethorpe and you’ve got arcades, a fun beach, lots of ice cream stops, and if you head down to the leisure centre, there’s a brilliant little play park. Not to mention the fantastic fish and chips at Saltys! Mablethorpe also hosts the wonderful Mablethorpe Seal Sanctuary and Wildlife Centre where there are so many animals to see. Monkeys, birds of prey, farm animals, meerkats, the list goes on: it’s not to be missed! Again, you’ll find a little play park and sand pit.
Another hidden gem, just down the road from Sutton-on-Sea is Farmer Brown’s Ice Cream Farm, with a farm shop, restaurant and ice cream parlour and great little outdoor play area.
And finally, if you fancy the hustle and bustle of Skegness, don’t miss the Aquarium and the moving dinosaurs at Jurassic Falls: your ticket covers both. The bowling alley on the pier is great fun and, of course, there are many fab chippies and arcades.
It’s only a 25-minute drive from Skegness to the beautiful beaches and colourful beach huts of Sutton-on-Sea so we highly recommend visiting both for a nice contrast of the two!
