Since issue 33 is a special arts and literature themed edition, we've compiled this list of all the best local theatre and film events in the area.

A magical, musical, interactive family theatre shows starring Geoffrey Jumper, Mandy and Leila.

Take Flight

Sat 11 May – 11.30, 1.30, 3.30pm

An original early years aerial theatre show for 0-2-year-olds which follows a mother and baby bird as the baby grows navigates making friends and overcoming challenges. A multi-sensory, interactive show where babies can touch, play, explore and have a swing in the silks.

There's a Monster in Your Show

Derby Theatre

Sat 11 & Sun 12 May – 10am,1pm & 4pm

High-energy 50-minute adaptation of Tom Fletcher’s book featuring lively original music, Monster and his friends Dragon, Alien and Unicorn.

Horrible Histories: Rotten Royals

The Winding Wheel, Chesterfield

Sun 16 Jun – 1.30pm & 5pm

Would you be wooed by Richard the Lionheart? Are you ready for a date with King Edward I? Would you be shaken or stirred by Richard III? See Mary Tudor knock the spots off Mary Queen of Scots! Can evil Elizabeth entertain England? Will you be hanged by King James for being a witch? Clap along with crazy King Charles and move to the groove with party Queen Victoria! It’s history with the nasty bits left in!

Half-term showings of If, starring Ryan Reynolds as the father of a young girl who can see everyone's imaginary friends who have been left behind as their real-life friends have grown up.

Ripley Outdoor Cinema FREE

Crossley Park, Ripley.

Sun 9 Jun – 2pm to 6pm

Outdoor cinema showing a children’s film at 2pm then a family film at 4pm. Bring your own chair and picnic, sit back and enjoy the film. Refreshments will be available to purchase. Check the Ripley Town Council website or Fb page for film title announcement.


The Greatest Showman Outdoor Cinema Singalong

Elvaston Castle

Sat 22 Jun – 8.30 to 11.30pm

If your kids can handle a late night, why not take them along to the greatest show? Get ready for some pure entertainment as you watch and singalong with The Greatest Showman on a huge open-air screen. Plus music to enjoy before the movie.

Pop-Up Theatre: Red Fairy Storybook

Markeaton Park Craft Village

Sat 22 & Sun 23 Jun – 11.30am and 1pm

AVP Theatre and their cast of puppets return with a brand-new set of fairy tales including Jack and the Beanstalk, The Frog Prince and The Princess and the Pea.

Pop-Up Theatre: Julius Caesar

Markeaton Park Craft Village

Thu 27 to Sat 29 Jun – 7pm

Derby-based Oddsocks Productions present William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. Rome is in chaos, trust in the government is weak and the emperor’s fate is written in the stars. Expect the tearing of togas, the swishing of swords, some preposterous puppetry and the biggest battle scene five actors have ever created.
